Toledo police are seeking information about the shooting of an Akron man during a attempted robbery this week on Academy Avenue in central Toledo.

Mario Purifie, 31, who was shot in the back, was admitted to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. No information about his condition was released.

The victim parked a car at the curb in the 2200 block of Academy about 3:40 a.m. Sunday and stepped out. A man approached and pointed a handgun over the top of the car at the victim's cousin, who was his passenger. The gunman then pointed the gun at the victim, saying, "Give it up!"

When the victim turned and started to run down the street, the gunman fired a single round at him, and he collapsed in front of the car. The assailant fled, running south on Academy.

He was described as black, in his 20s, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, 170 pounds, of dark complexion, with a thin face, sideburns, and short black hair. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stopper. Callers may remain anonymous, and qualify for a reward.
