NAPOLEON — Henry County plans to cut its ties with the Henry County Humane Society and set up its own dog shelter.

County commissioners voted last week to terminate its contract with the humane society effective Oct. 31. The board and the county dog warden are looking for a building to house a dog pound and hope to have one in operation by Nov. 1.

Commissioners said in a statement that the sides have exchanged proposals for services for more than a year and the board decided it was “no longer in the county's best interests” to contract with the humane society. For more than 25 years, the humane society has housed and cared for stray dogs for the county.
