U.S. Park Service gets Monroe battlefield land
10/12/2010MONROE — Monroe County, the city of Monroe, and the Monroe County Historical Society Tuesday transferred to the National Park Service the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the War of 1812.
Local and federal officials gathered on the steps of the Monroe County Courthouse to make the ceremonial donation of property for what is to become a national park.
In March, 2009, President Obama signed a federal protection law that designated the River Raisin Battlefield as a National Battlefield Park to be included in the park system. When U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar determines enough land has been donated, the battlefield will be officially established as a national park.
