Battery Recycling Inc. of Van Wert, Ohio, was fined $15,750 by the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration this month for several “serious” worker safety violations.

The agency said the company failed to ensure workers properly used respirators while breaking lead and acid batteries, and did not sufficiently protect employees from lead exposure, among other hazards.

Jule Hovi, OSHA area director, said Battery Recycling is scheduled to meet with the agency next week. It can contest the fines and citations.
