Family left homeless after accidental fire in central Toledo

A family was left homeless Wednesday when an accidental kitchen fire caused an estimated $10,000 damage to a central Toledo duplex, authorities said.

The occupants had escaped unhurt by the time fire crews arrived about 11:52 p.m. Tuesday and saw smoke coming out of a residence in the 2400 block of Maplewood Avenue, according to the Toledo Fire Department.

The fire started in the lower kitchen cabinet, according to fire department records. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 12:17 a.m. Wednesday, according to a fire dispatcher.

The fire was ruled accidental. Its exact cause was under investigation.
