Grave stones in Toledo Calvary Cemetery damaged

11/8/2010

At least 25 grave stones at Toledo Calvary Cemetery have been overturned and damaged by unknown suspects, the Catholic Diocese of Toledo announced.

The damage at the city's largest cemetery likely occured overnight Saturday, said Sally Oberski, director of diocese communications. The heaviest of the toppled granite monuments were 600 lbs., Ms. Oberski said.

“This is so disheartening to us,” she said. “It's so sad to feel they have to do this. They get some kind of cheap thrill out of it.”

The families of those whose family members' gravestones were damaged are responsible for repairs, which may be covered by homeowners insurance, and the diocese “perpetual care fund” will be used to repair stones of those with no living family, Ms. Oberski said.

The diocese will reset all of the toppled stones at no cost.
