Ex-state patrol trooper gets probation for fight

A former Ohio Highway Patrol trooper convicted of assault for injuring a man during a July fight has been placed on probation for two years in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Jason Urbina, 25, of Bryan pleaded no contest Nov. 8 to misdemeanor assault. That was lowered from felonious assault in a negotiated plea.

Judge Gene Zmuda on Wednesday sentenced Mr. Urbina to six months in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio but suspended the sentence in lieu of probation. The judge also ordered 150 hours of community service and limited drug and alcohol testing.

Sylvania police said Mr. Urbina was off duty and a member of a wedding party at the Win gate Hotel on South Main Street in Sylvania when he became involved in a quarrel with a man from another wedding party. He has since resigned from the patrol, authorities said.
