Fire destroys vacant home in central Toledo

1/12/2011

The fire at 45 City Park Ave. at Greene Street was reported about 5:50 a.m., according to the Toledo Fire Department.

The first fire crews at the scene found the house engulfed in flames. It was determined that it would be unsafe for firefighters to enter the house, so they used a defensive tactic, fighting the blaze from the outside, fire Lt. Larry Armstrong said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 6:30 a.m., by which time the house was a total loss, the fire lieutenant said.

About 9 a.m., city crews were in the process of tearing down what remained of the two-story, wood frame house.

The damage estimate was unavailable.

The Lucas County Auditor's Web site lists Marlinda Jones as the owner of the house and shows it was purchased on Dec. 31, 2008 for $12,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
