Man held after 2-hour standoff in North Toledo
1/16/2011Authorities Sunday identified the North Toledo man who barricaded himself in his house Saturday night with five rifles and a shotgun in a two-hour standoff with police.
Johnnie Hopkins, 32, of 436 Manhattan Blvd., surrendered shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday and was charged with criminal damaging and inducing panic, police reports said. The standoff ended after police fired tear gas into the home, prompting Mr. Hopkins to exit from the back door.
Officers, including members of the department's special tactics team, responded to the address at about 5:50 p.m. A neighbor had called police to report that Mr. Hopkins, from an upstairs window, shot out the windshield of the neighbor's rental car, according to reports.
Mr. Hopkins refused to come to the door to speak with officers, as well as several negotiators. Nearby homes were evacuated and Manhattan was blocked at Cherry Street and Phillips Avenue.
The Directed Patrol SWAT team finally deployed the tear gas after all negotiation attempts failed, police said. Mr. Hopkins was transported to Mercy St. Vincent Hospital for psychological evaluation. Police reported finding six firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition in the house.
