Former Toledo Public Schools official sentenced to 10 years for theft

Former Toledo Public Schools business administrator Dan Burns was sentenced Monday morning in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to spend 10 years in prison for theft from the district.

Judge Ruth Ann Franks sentenced Burns, 55, on one count each of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, theft in office, and tampering with records. He was found guilty of implementing a scheme that defrauded the school district of more than $650,000 between 2002 and 2006.

Burns is already serving a six-year prison sentence for similar convictions in the Cleveland Public Schools district.

Judge Franks ordered that the Cleveland and Toledo sentences be served concurrently, meaning he will spend 10 years behind bars. She also ordered that Burns pay about $658,000 in restitution to the school district or its insurance companies for the thefts.
