The Toledo Zoo plans to demolish houses on nine parcels adjacent to its South Toledo complex.

The zoo notified neighbors in a letter last week that renting the houses that it owns on Dartmouth and Amherst drives and Spencer Street is not "cost-effective," and so it plans to have them razed this summer.

"It's cost us money to rent those and keep them up, and all that," said Andi Norman, director of marketing and public relations.

Ms. Norman said Monday the plan is to plant grass on the cleared property, and said there are no plans right now for expanding the zoo.

The parcels are 1757 and 1609 Spencer; 104 Dartmouth, and 303, 305, 307, 309, 311, and 327 Amherst.
