Trains running again past derailment site
2/9/2011ARCADIA, Ohio — Trains have again started moving past the spot in Hancock County's Cass Township where a Norfolk Southern ethanol train derailed and burned early Sunday, but a railroad spokesman said cleanup is likely to take weeks to complete.
Spokesman Rudy Husband revised the derailment's toll Tuesday, saying 31 of the eastbound train's 62 cars jumped the tracks, with 29 landing in a pileup. Ten of those cars burned, and some but not all of the others spilled their contents onto the tracks and ground, he said.
Damaged track was repaired with temporary rail, and trains will travel at reduced speeds until permanent repairs are made, Mr. Husband said.
All of the denatured ethanol that remained in tank cars after the crash has been removed, the spokesman said, but wreckage remains at the scene pending salvage or scrapping.
The derailment's cause remains under investigation.
