1st female Marine pilot to speak in Perrysburg

Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Deal, the first female pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps, will speak of her experiences at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Schaller Memorial Building, 130 West Indiana Ave., Perrysburg.

Commander Deal, who grew up in Pemberville and graduated from Eastwood High School, joined the Marines during a summer break from Kent State University, where she studied aerospace flight technology. She received commercial and private pilot's licenses and is a certified flight instructor.

She became a pilot in the Marines in 1995. She was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame in 1999. She has served in Afghanistan and Iraq and is now in the Marine Corps Reserves.
