Traffic patterns will be shifting this week on U.S. 24 west of Maumee as construction of an interchange at the east end of the Fort to Port Highway advances.

Starting Tuesday, westbound traffic will be shifted onto the future Waterville exit ramp that will pass through a tunnel under the new expressway, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.

Eastbound traffic will be crossed over onto the ramp alignment between Dutch Road and Fallen Timbers Lane once the westbound shift is completed.

The shift will allow contractors to finish the structure that will carry the new highway over the existing roadway and connect it to the four-lane U.S. 24 east of Waterville. The expressway's Waterville-Napoleon section is scheduled to open in summer 2012.

ODOT cautioned motorists to be alert for temporary lane restrictions.
