Deacon Tom Carone gets ready to put ashes on the forehead of Kady DeWinter, 2, of Rossford, who is being held by her grandmother, Hope Hutchison, during an Ash Wednesday service at the Historic Church of St. Patrick in Toledo. Ash Wednesday, which occurs 40 days before Easter (not including Sundays), marks the beginning of Lent in Western Christianity. Its name comes from the practice of rubbing ashes on the foreheads of believers as a symbol of mourning and repentance.
