TIFFIN — With a deficit looming, the Tiffin city Board of Education agreed Tuesday night to lay off 39 employees.

Included in the cuts were 22 support staff and 17 teachers, although nine of those teachers are expected to be rehired next month using $500,000 in federal funds designated to bring teachers who have lost their jobs back to work.

Board members also agreed to continue receiving no compensation and to freeze administrators' and supervisors' salaries. The board also is looking at a plan to close two elementary schools and reconfigure the district's grade levels for the 2012-13 school year.
