PORT CLINTON - The National Weather Service has declared the storm that hit Ottawa County this week was a tornado.

Officials said the tornado touched down about 1 a.m. Wednesday near Paulsen and Little Portage roads in Bay Township about four miles southwest of Port Clinton.

The twister uprooted trees, ripped roof sections off some outbuildings, and damaged the roofs of a couple of houses as it barreled northeast about a mile and a half, cutting a path about 30 yards wide. The tornado ended near Darr Hoppinger Road.

The weather service said the tornado had the lowest rating, EF-0 on the Fujita or EF scale. Winds were moving 75 miles per hour.

The NWS said an EF-0 tornado also caused damage in Oregon on Wednesday morning.
