Pilot unhurt in plane crash in Sandusky
5/5/2011SANDUSKY — An airplane crash at the Griffing-Sandusky Airport, just east of Sandusky, is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.
The plane, driven by Joe Greene, 69, of Sandusky, crashed at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said. Mr. Greene was not injured and there were no passengers.
Mr. Greene was attempting to land the plane, a 1995 Commander Model 114B single engine low-wing aircraft, flying west to east, on the runway at Griffing Airport, authorities said.
The plane went off the left side of the runway into a grass field where the left wing hit the field, pushing the plane back onto the runway, according to the report. The propeller and front and right landing gear hit the runway and the airplane slid to a stop.
The plane, which sustained heavy damage, was removed from the runway and is being held in a local hangar pending an investigation by the Federal Aviation Association/National Transportation Safety Board.
Authorities said Mr. Greene reported a crosswind from the left as he attempted to land.
