Tornado touches down south of Van Wert

VAN WERT, Ohio — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down south of here near Ohio City.

The touchdown was about 7 p.m. Monday, with winds estimated at 93 mph. Witnesses said the tornado, given the EF-1 rating on the Fujita or EF scale for its wind speed, formed from multiple vortexes that merged into a single twister that became wrapped in rain before lifting from the ground.

No injuries were reported. Houses and barns were damaged and trees and utility poles were downed.
