Heavy rain causes flooding in some areas

Area motorists Thursday morning braved partially flooded roads while others used detours to get to their destinations after a storm dumped between 1 and 3 inches of water overnight in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

“It all depended on how lucky you are,” said Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, a private forecasting service in State College, Pa.

“Some areas got just over an inch of rain. But there were scattered pockets of heavy rain that got between two and three inches, say, just to the west of Toledo, around Perrysburg, and around Adrian.”

In Toledo, all main roads were passable Thursday morning, but some low lying areas, including the Toledo Country Club golf course off River Road, remained flooded.

The Ohio Department of Transportation announced road closures that included State Rt. 101, northeast of Tiffin between Township Road 122 and State Hospital Road, and U.S. 224 between State Rt. 67 and County Road 17 in Seneca County, with detours established via State Rt. 19 and State Rt. 18 and via State Rt. 67 and State Rt. 100 respectively.

There could be more showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon, including pockets of heavy rain, according AccuWeather.

“The farther east you are, the more likely you are to see heavy rain,” Mr. Kines said. “But it will taper off tonight.”

Law enforcement agents across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan did not report any weather-related serious injury accidents, saying that motorists generally slowed down to allow for adverse road conditions.
