Communities plan parades, events for Memorial Day holiday

Toledo's Memorial Day parade will be Saturday in the downtown area, stepping off at 10 a.m. at the corner of Summit and Monroe streets. It will begin forming at 8:30 a.m.

The parade will proceed north on Summit Street to Jackson Street, head west on Jackson, and then finish at the Civic Center Mall off North Michigan Street.

About midway through, the parade will be stopped and a Community Covenant will be signed by Toledo Mayor Mike Bell and representatives from all the military branches.

At noon, there will be a memorial service for fallen soldiers and a swearing-in of about 90 new Army recruits.

Surrounding communities are also hosting Memorial Day activities (all of the following events are on Memorial Day Monday), including:

Adrian -- Parade starting at 11 a.m., forms at 10:30 a.m. in front of the National Guard armory, goes on Maumee street to Monument Park.

Berkey -- Services at 9 a.m. at the Berkey Cemetery.

Bowling Green -- Parade at 10:30 a.m., from the post office on the corner of Washington and Main street to the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Findlay -- Parade from 10-10:30 a.m., downtown.

Fremont -- Parade starting at 10 a.m., at the corner of State and Front streets, ending at Rodger Young Park.

Fostoria -- Service for veterans at Fountain Cemetery, 702 Van Buren St. at 10 a.m.

Genoa -- Memorial services at 9 a.m., at Clay Township Cemetery.

Grand Rapids, Ohio -- Memorial service and parade beginning at 10:30 a.m., in the park next to village hall.

Jerry City, Ohio -- Memorial service at Jerry Cemetery at 11 a.m.

Kalida, Ohio -- Church service at St. Michaels at 8 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 9 a.m.

Maumee -- Parade at 9:30 a.m., starting at United Methodist Church.

McComb, Ohio -- Parade at 10 a.m., downtown.

Monroe -- Parade at 2 p.m., downtown.

Oak Harbor, Ohio -- Memorial services at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ, followed by a parade at 11 a.m., beginning on Park Street.

Ottawa, Ohio -- Parade at 10:30 a.m., at the corner of Main and Perry streets and proceeding to the courthouse for a memorial service.

Perrysburg -- Parade at 10 a.m., starting at Louisiana Avenue and 5th Street and proceeding to the Fort Meigs cemetery for a memorial service.

Richfield Center -- Memorial services at 9:30 a.m., at St. Elizabeth's Cemetery.

Sandusky -- Parade at 9 a.m., starting at the Ohio Veterans Home and ending at Oakland Cemetery, where services will be held at 10 a.m.

Swanton -- Parade at 10:30 a.m., starting at Crestwood School and ending at Memorial park.

Sylvania -- Parade at 10 a.m., downtown.

Sylvania Township -- Memorial services at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Marygrove and 10:30 a.m. at Wolfinger Cemetery in Secor Metropark.

Whitehouse -- Services at 10 a.m. at Whitehouse Cemetery.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

Toledo, county, state, and federal government offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Government offices in Perrysburg, Oregon, Maumee, and Sylvania also will be closed, as will Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicle deputy registrar sites across the state.

A list of select businesses and services follows:

Public utilities

Toledo's Department of Public Utilities will be closed, along with Toledo Edison, its parent company, FirstEnergy, and Columbia Gas.

Emergency services will be available for Toledo Edison, Public Utilities, and Columbia Gas customers.

Retail centers

Westfield Franklin Park and the Shops at Fallen Timbers will be open regular hours; the Town Center at Levis Commons will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Trash pickup

Refuse collection will leap forward one day as scheduled on the calendar for Toledo residents.

Maumee, Perrysburg, Sylvania, and Oregon will be delayed one day during the week.

Libraries

The Main Toledo-Lucas County Public Library downtown and all branches will be close Sunday and Monday.

Mail service

Post offices will be closed, and no mail will be delivered.

Bus service

Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority buses will operate on a holiday schedule.

Parking

Meter parking in downtown Toledo is free from 5 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Tuesday.
