Weather service confirms tornadoes during Wednesday's storm
5/26/2011The National Weather Service has confirmed that separate tornadoes touched down during severe storms Wednesday in opposite corners of northwest Ohio.
About 3:25 p.m., a tornado touched down for several seconds along Kear Road, north of Van Wert, Ohio, and damaged power poles, according to the weather service office in northern Indiana. The 40-yard wide tornado traveled 0.2-miles and had wind speeds of 80 mph to 85 mph, placing it at EF-0 on the Fujita scale.
Between 6 and 6:15 p.m. in Huron County, a tornado touched down near a cemetery on the southeast side of Monroeville, Ohio, the Cleveland office of the weather service said in a statement.
The 100-yard-wide tornado traveled mostly through farm fields as it continued east into Ridgefield and Norwalk townships at 100 mph, according to the weather service. On Halfway Road, the tornado destroyed a barn and continued eastward south of U.S. 20, damaging roofs of businesses and houses and toppling trees, the weather service said.
About eight miles away from its touchdown, the tornado lifted near North Greenwich Milan Town Line Road and Tiger Road at the west edge of Townsend Township.The tornado was rated EF-1 on the Fujita scale.
About 3:25 p.m. Thursday, Fulton County sheriff’s deputies receive a report of a funnel briefly on the ground nearly County Roads L and 18 in Dover Township. The weather service had not confirmed the sighting last night.
