Storms knock out power to thousands

Police barricaded an area where a street light came down on Glendale Ave at Kenyon Dr. during the thunderstorms that hit the area Sunday. The street was closed to traffic.

Severe thunderstorms swept across northwest Ohio Sunday night, felling trees, knocking over light poles, and downing power lines.

A tree fell on a garage in the 2400 block of Charlestown Avenue, in West Toledo, police said. Police were responding to several calls of trees limbs down in the vicinity of Central Avenue and Holland-Sylvania Road.

No injuries were reported as of 6:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service’s Cleveland office said the highest reported winds were 46 mph at Toledo Express Airport around 5:30 p.m.

“A line of severe thunderstorms developed in Iowa this morning and unfortunately clipped Toledo,” said Will Kubina of the NWS in Cleveland. The bulk of the storm had moved east, past Toledo, by 6:30 p.m., he said.

In Fulton County, the sheriff’s department said the thunderstorms left a trail of downed trees, poles, and wires, with minor damage to buildings and roofs, but no injuries.

Toledo Edison said 11,000 customers were without power, mostly in Williams and Fulton counties.

Sylvania police said a light pole was knocked down and fell into a yard at Grandville and Gail drives.
