WOODVILLE, Ohio — A Helena, Ohio, boy was seriously injured when he tried to avoid hitting a deer while driving an all-terrain vehicle Thursday night in Sandusky County’s Woodville Township, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Joseph Paul, 16, was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, according to the patrol’s Fremont post. He was listed in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said Friday morning.

Young Paul was driving on Township Road 121 about 10:35 p.m. when he swerved to avoid the deer on the road, causing the vehicle to overturn several times, troopers said. The boy was thrown to the ground.

He was wearing a helmet. No citation was issued, according to the patrol.

Woodville is about 20 miles southeast of Toledo.
