8 area counties to receive FEMA aid

Agencies in eight northwest Ohio counties will receive a share of more than $4.4 million for emergency food and shelter programs awarded to organizations in 46 Ohio counties, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) announced yesterday.

The money is distributed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of a grant program created in 1983 to help residents with food, rent, and utility bills.

The money will go to a local group in each jurisdiction, which in turn decides which nonprofit or government agency will receive funding. For example, in Lucas County, the group is the United Way of Greater Toledo, a spokesman for Senator Brown said.

Allocations for northwest Ohio include $231,853 for Lucas County; $50,879 for Allen County; $40,795 for Erie County; $17,476 for Henry County; $35,701 for Huron County; $27,771 for Ottawa County; $22,983 for Williams County, and $60,780 for Wood County.
