About 1,700 first-shift workers at Chrysler Group LLC’s Toledo Assembly complex got an unexpected day off Friday when an intense, localized rain storm overwhelmed drain pipes and spilling storm water into the facility, company and union officials said.

First shift workers in both the Wrangler plant and the neighboring factory which makes Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro vehicles, were called off while sanitation and skilled trades workers mopped up flooded areas inside both facilities.

Second shift workers in the Wrangler plant, which has been working overtime to keep up with demand, were told to report to work Friday afternoon for their regular shift. The Liberty and Nitro plant does not have a second shift.
