The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library announced Wednesday that it has been selected to receive a $75,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to teach its youngest patrons about finances.

Clyde Scoles, library director, said youngsters will learn basic concepts about spending, sharing, and saving, while their parents will learn about budgeting and other financial literacy concepts and how they can pass those on to their children.

As part of Wednesday’s announcement, Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster was on hand at the main library downtown to greet — and share cookies with — children from Headstart classes at the nearby Jefferson Center.

Preschoolers also are invited to stop by PNC’s “Mobile Learning Adventure” between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the library’s Civic Plaza rooftop at the main library, 325 Michigan St. The free exhibit, which is designed for children 5 and under, offers educational games and activities.
