Voters decisively defeated two levies Tuesday that were aimed at getting the Wood County village of Portage out of fiscal emergency and keeping it intact.

A 0.4-percent income tax would have brought in $35,000 a year, and a 1.6-mill, five-year operating levy for streets would have generated $11,000 a year.

The village has been in fiscal emergency since April, 2009, and needs to show the state auditor it has a plan to get its books balanced. The measures on the ballot were to part of that plan.

Voters defeated tax levies in May, 2010, and May, 2011.
