Perrysburg Township police Thursday rescued two children and two women from an overturned car in a ditch half full of icy water.

A man who was a passenger escaped on his own. All were taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo with what police called non-life threatening injuries.

“The occupants were pretty hypothermic,” Officer Joe Ball said.

The car, driven by Andrea MacRitchie, 25, of Toledo, was northbound on State Rt. 199 south of Eckel Junction Road about 6:50 p.m. when it went out of control and drove off the west side of the road, Officer Ball said. The car overturned and landed on its top in about 4 feet of water in a ditch that is about 8 feet deep.

A passerby reported the crash. Police officers were the first to arrive and broke out windows to free the children, a 4-year-old girl and 5 year-old boy, from the partially submerged car.

The names of the passengers were not released.

A criminal investigation into the crash is under way, Officer Ball said.
