Humane Society seeks home care-givers
11/20/2011The Toledo Area Humane Society recently has taken in more than 20 sick, injured, or neglected dogs through its cruelty department and is in need of about 15 volunteers to provide foster care.
So many dogs are in need of foster care that the shelter is running out of space for adoptable dogs, agency officials said.
Some of the dogs in need of foster care include Payton, a young Sharpei mix hit by a car and recovering from a broken shoulder. She needs about 4 to 6 weeks to recover.
Also in need are Benz, a 1-year-old American bulldog who needs socialization and to gain weight, Chester, a 1-year-old "pit bull" mix who needs fostering for at least two weeks until he is able to go up for adoption, and eight 9-month-old shepherd/boxer mixes who need socialization before they are able to go up for adoption in mid-December.
The litter can be split among individual foster homes or grouped into pairs if foster volunteers would like for them to have playmates.
The Toledo Area Humane Society provides foster homes with all of the supplies that are needed to care for an animal. Normally foster volunteers go through an orientation program as a group after several individuals sign up.
However, because of the current high need, the humane society will train volunteers individually to get them up and running more quickly, said Cyndi Condit, Toledo Area Humane Society marketing and special events manager.
