New flood warnings up for rivers in northwest Ohio

12/6/2011

New flood warnings were issued Monday for several northwest Ohio rivers while flooding continued along others after another round of rain in the region.

Minor flooding was forecast in the National Weather Service’s new warnings for the Portage River and Eagle Creek; the Maumee, Tiffin, St. Mary’s, and St. Joseph rivers all resumed rising Monday.

None was expected to reach flood levels to which they rose last week after heavy rains that exceeded 3 inches in parts of the region, followed in some areas by several inches of snow.

As of 8 p.m. Monday, 1.22 inches of rain had fallen at Toledo Express Airport during the storm that arrived Sunday. The rainfall brought the year-to-date precipitation total at the airport to 46.66 inches, making 2011 the second-wettest year on record. The record is 47.84 inches, set in 1950.

Flood conditions continued Monday on the Maumee at Waterville and Defiance, and were forecast to return at Grand Rapids by Tuesday evening. The rain also was expected to cause a slight rise in the swollen Tiffin River.
