Three contracted workers were injured Friday while working on a new kiln at Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties in Woodville, Ohio.
WOODVILLE — Three people were injured in an industrial accident Friday morning at a plant near this Sandusky County community, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 9:40 a.m. at the Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties LLC plant at 755 Lime Rd. in Woodville Township.
Amy Louviere, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which is investigating the accident, said the injured workers fell approximately 24 feet to the ground when a rebar-concrete form on which they were working collapsed. She said the workers are contract steel erectors working with Ccc Group Inc. in San Antonio, Texas.
Woodville Township Fire Chief Paul Heineman said two of the workers were taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio, by air ambulance and the third worker was taken by ground ambulance to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. The employees were alert and conscious, the fire chief said.
The MHSA ordered the company to shut down the affected area and is sending investigators to the plant.
Chief Heineman said that when firefighters were called, two of the workers had already been extricated from beneath the collapsed structure and the third was pulled from the rubble by other construction workers on the site.
Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties is part of a large quarry complex in Woodville, Ohio.
A year ago, the Woodville operation of Martin Marietta received a 35 percent job-creation tax credit, worth $236,000 for five years, for a $53 million project at the site. The company said at the time it planned to build a factory, creating 15 jobs and retaining 160.
The company makes magnesia-based chemicals and fiber-reinforced composite materials for the transportation and military industries.
Woodville is about 20 miles southeast of Toledo.
