United North meeting set

Awards to be presented to N. Toledo residents

North Toledo residents and neighborhood business owners are invited to United North's annual meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Zablocki Senior Center, 3015 Lagrange St.

Attendees at the meeting will hear about a number of neighborhood projects and services, including newly constructed homes around Chase, Sherman and Woodward Schools; senior housing complex Crane's Landing; the first phase of renovation of the Ohio Theatre, and the Financial Opportunity Center. Awards will be presented to volunteers and local businesses. A light meal will be served.

"We still have a lot of projects moving forward," despite the tough economic climate, said Jesse Marroquin, president of the United North board.

Lonnie Homan, a volunteer with the group, added, "United North offers an enormous amount of opportunity for homeowners and renters," such as financial management programs and programs that offer free paint and landscaping. Mr. Homan has lived in the Vistula area of Toledo for 30 years; he will receive United North's Homeowner of the Year award at the meeting.

"If you live in the United North area, if you are a homeowner or renter, you need to be involved in your neighborhood," Mr. Homan said.

United North advocates for the neighborhood through housing programs, business development, community organizing and other services.
