5 hurt in wrecks that close NB I-75

Five people were injured in two separate crashes Saturday morning that closed northbound I-75 near the Alexis Road exit, authorities reported.

A vehicle driver, a tractor-trailer driver, a police officer, and two firefighters were taken to Mercy St. Vincent hospital with minor injuries.

The first crash happened when an SUV reportedly traveled off the road and struck a concrete barrier. The driver was injured in the wreck and the SUV reportedly caught on fire.

The second crash happened when a semi came upon the scene, jackknifed, and struck an ambulance that had responded to the first crash. The semi driver and two firefighters inside the ambulance were hurt.

A Washington Township police office was injured when he slipped on ice.

The northbound I-75 lanes were still closed at 9 a.m. but the Alexis Road exit was open by 8 a.m. and allowing people to re-enter the highway beyond the crashes, according to Channel 13 media. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
