2nd Habitat for Humanity Restore opens

Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity has opened its second ReStore location to sell donated building materials and other home products, and the nonprofit organization plans to expand the Maumee site to include space for administrative offices and warehousing.

An October, 2010, fire displaced Habitat for Humanity, damaging administrative offices at 223 S. Fearing Blvd. and nearly destroying the ReStore there. Administrative offices have temporarily relocated to Holland, and a ReStore location opened at 2522 S. Reynolds Rd. in June.

Habitat for Humanity plans an estimated $200,000 to $300,000 in renovations to the property at 1310 Conant St. it bought last year. The site is a former Carter Lumber warehouse with a total of 40,000 square feet of space, said Michael McIntyre, Habitat for Humanity executive director.

The ReStore there opened earlier this month, and the home-products thrift shop is to be doubled in size to 14,000 square feet by spring. This fall, administrative offices are expected to move to the Conant Street location, which has space to warehouse building supplies that have been stored in buildings throughout the Toledo area, Mr. McIntyre said.

"It's a great site for us," Mr. McIntyre said. "Now to be able to have it all on one campus is going to help us."

All of ReStore's profits are used to help Habitat for Humanity build and repair houses for low-income families in Lucas County.

The ReStore location damaged by fire had 14,000 square feet of space for new and used building materials, furniture, appliances, and other home products. The two stores replacing it will be 8,000 square feet once renovations to the Conant Street building are complete, Mr. McIntyre said.
