TEMPERANCE -- What's the best way for a frugal shopper to buy groceries locally?

Paula Wethington, an expert on getting good value for your money, will lead a seminar called "Grocery Shopping on a Budget" from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Monroe County Community College's Whitman Center.

"What I've been doing on and off is teaching and explaining how to do this in my area -- how to save money in Monroe County," she said.

At the Whitman Center, she will focus on grocery shopping "We'll talk about couponing and what stores in the Monroe and Toledo areas offer double coupons," she said.

One store she said she recommends is Aunt Millie's on Lewis Avenue in Temperance, a thrift shop that offers good prices on bread. Warehouse stores such as Costco and Sam's Club generally have good prices on snacks.

On Saturday, she said she'll also discuss the subject of what constitutes a reasonable grocery bill. She uses a U.S. Department of Agriculture Cost of Food at Home study.

The cost is $10, or $5 for seniors. Registration is required and can be done by calling the Whitman Center at 734-847-0559 or the Main Campus at 734-384-4127.
