The Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commission’s recommended approval Thursday of a local “landmark designation” for the vacant Fiberglas Tower downtown and the adjacent Levis Square.

The commissioners voted 4-0 in favor; Plan Commissioner Cynthia Geronimo was absent.

The Eyde Co. of East Lansing, Mich., wants to renovate the building and needs the designation to pursue a state of Ohio historic tax credit. The request will also come before Toledo City Council.

The historic tax credits are worth up to 25 percent of the $29.4 million project cost but not exceeding $5 million, as part of the financing plan to turn the vacant building, newly named the “Tower on the Maumee,” into a mixed-use facility.
