PANDORA, Ohio -- A 77-year-old man suffered acute hypothermia after spending about 30 minutes in an ice-covered pond as he tried to rescue his dog Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Stan Newton of Riley Township was in critical condition at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, a hospital spokesman said. The dog, a Labrador, was fine and at home, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
The dog fell through the ice about 10:15 a.m., at which time authorities say Mr. Newton tried to rescue it and also fell in.
Pandora is about 55 miles southwest of Toledo.
