Casino officials give $25,000 to local NAACP chapter
3/1/2012Hollywood Casino Toledo executives presented a $25,000 check to the Toledo’s NAACP chapter during a ceremony Thursday afternoon.
“Thank you for your support,” said Rev. Kevin Bedford, the NAACP’s president, after he shook the hand of Richard St. Jean, the casino’s general manager.
The reverend said the bulk of the money will go to funding scholarships for Toledo students to compete in ACT-SO, a national event run by the NAACP where high school students vie in business, visual arts, performing, and other categories.
Thursday’s check ceremony marked the second time this week the East Toledo casino announced it will donate money to an outside group.
Casino officials on Monday said they plan to give to give $12,750 to the neighboring city of Rossford to buy and train a new police dog.
The $300 million casino — about 90 percent built on the Maumee riverfront — will open no earlier than May 29, making it the state’s second Las Vegas-style casino to open.
