TEMPERANCE — Bedford Township voters will find a request for replacement of the community’s 1-mill fire-protection levy on the Aug. 7 ballot.

The township board acted on the measure Tuesday. The current levy, which pays for fire department operations, equipment, and other capital expenditures, expires at the end of the year. It too is for 1 mill, but Michigan’s Headlee rollback has reduced its effective rate to 0.898 mills.

The four-year replacement levy would generate about $960,000 in its first year and cost the owner of a home with a $100,000 taxable value about $100, or $10 more than what that homeowner is currently paying.
