Bowling Green voters Tuesday night resoundingly approved a 0.6-mill, 20-year bond issue, which will generate $3.8 million to build a new outdoor aquatic facility on the site of the existing 49-year-old pool at City Park.

“In these tough economic times, it’s just amazing support the community gave to the aquatic project,” said Michelle Grigore, director of parks and recreation. “I’m truly amazed and thankful for the win we had. I thought it would be very close.”

The existing pool will be demolished after the coming season. The goal is to complete the new complex for the 2013 season, Ms. Grigore said.

The new facility is to include lap lanes as well as areas where swimmers walk into the pool, a splash pad and splash toys, slides, a new bathhouse, and a new filtration system.

City officials had said they would ask voters for the funds to build the new pool once, and if it had failed, continue using the old pool for as long as possible.
