TEMPERANCE -- Bedford Township voters will find a request for replacement of the community's 1-mill fire-protection levy on the Aug. 7 ballot.

The township board acted on the measure Tuesday.

The current levy, which pays for fire department operations, equipment, and other capital expenditures, expires at the end of the year.

It also is for 1 mill, but Michigan's Headlee rollback has reduced its effective rate to 0.898 mill.

The four-year replacement levy would generate about $960,000 in its first year and would cost the owner of a house with a $100,000 taxable value about $100, or $10 more than what that homeowner is currently paying.
