Freeze may threaten early planters
3/25/2012Gardeners in northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan who thought they’d get an early start on their plants could be in for a surprise: Mother Nature is not done spreading frost and freezing temperatures in the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for freezing temperatures Monday night and early Tuesday.
For plants started in pots, gardeners should have plenty of time to bring them indoors.
The extended warm temperatures experienced during the past two weeks are over and the cold snap could threaten fruit trees and other tender plants as well.
Northwest Ohio could experience temperatures in the low 30s and upper 20s, the weather service said.
Michigan temperatures are expected to drop to 30 degrees.
The weather service says a high pressure system across northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan is to blame for the drop.
