LaSalle Twp. supervisor plans to retire this year

LaSALLE, Mich. — Longtime LaSalle Township Supervisor Larry Rutledge announced Monday that he plans to retire at the end of the year when his term expires.

Mr. Rutledge, 69, has been supervisor, the township's highest elected official, since 1988. In February, the Michigan Townships Association gave him its Life Member award for exemplary public service. He served a one-year term as president of the MTA in 1997 and is a Democrat.

"I have been honored to serve for 35 years, but it's time to move on," Mr. Rutledge said.

Mr. Rutledge became a public official in 1975, when he was appointed township treasurer after the death of Claude Cousino. He held the position through 1978, and decided not to seek election.

In 1980, he successfully ran for township trustee and held that office until 1984, when he made a successful run for township clerk.
