Bedford trustee to run for twp. treasurer

TEMPERANCE — Bedford Township Trustee Paul Francis announced Tuesday that he is running for the position of township treasurer.

Mr. Francis, 66, is in his eighth year as trustee. He seeks the office being vacated by Sherri Meyer, who will retire at the end of the year after 30 years as treasurer.

The only other candidate is Lambertville accountant Laura Collins.The deadline for filing to run is May 15. Mr. Francis and Ms. Collins are Republicans and will face off in an Aug. 7 primary.

Mr. Francis made his announcement at the township board’s regular meeting. During the public comment period, he took the podium and said he was speaking as a citizen, not an officeholder.

He said he was well qualified for the treasurer’s office, with 43 years’ experience as a certified public accountant and expertise in all aspects of government accounting and financial reporting. Mr. Francis is a Lambertville resident and Bedford High School graduate.

The treasurer’s position pays about $63,000 annually.
