Downtown square to be summer site for music

Levis Square in downtown Toledo will become an outdoor venue for musical entertainment this summer.

The city of Toledo, in conjunction with the Downtown Toledo Improvement District, plans to sponsor bands and dancing at the square every Thursday evening from 6 until 9, starting May 31.

Denny Garvin, Toledo's director of parks and forestry, said the city hopes to attract downtown workers, visitors, and residents to the events, which will be free. So far, the city has confirmed only the first week's act -- the local Night Session Big Band -- but Mr. Garvin said he is confident officials will soon line up additional performers.

"There's enough enthusiasm from everyone we're talking to that we're going to make it happen," he said. "We've got a lot of energy in downtown so we're making it our push right now."

The city plans to revamp Promenade Park, a block away from Levis Square on the downtown riverfront, and make that park a focal point for outdoor entertainment. Having events at Levis Square provides a good transition for that, Mr. Garvin said.
