Fermi 2 restarts after refueling
5/6/2012NEWPORT, Mich. — DTE Energy said it restarted its Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plant following a refueling and maintenance outage that began March 26.
The 1,140-megawatt nuclear power plant began producing electricity during the weekend and operators will gradually increase to full power over the next several days.
About a third of the reactor’s nuclear fuel rods were replaced and more than 15,000 activities, including inspections and equipment maintenance, were performed, the company said Saturday.
Among the projects was upgrading the cables that connect the emergency diesel generators to the Monroe County plant and upgrading the piping that supplies cooling water to the generators.
New equipment was added to the transmission switchyard, which the company said would improve grid reliability.
Fermi 2 is owned and operated by Detroit Edison, a subsidiary of DTE Energy.
