Underground railroad examined

The Underground Railroad of Northwest Ohio, a program sponsored by the Waterville Historical Society, will be presented May 16 by Judy Justus, historian and author.

Author of Down From the Mountain, the story of the relationship of Thomas Jefferson and his slave, Sally Hemings, Mrs. Justus of Perrysburg has written several other books and speaks on historical topics, including native Americans, General George Custer, and the Spaffords in Wood County. The Spafford family included Perrysburg's founder, Amos Spafford.

In 2011 the Perrysburg League of Women Voters presented Mrs. Justus with the Stranahan Citizen of the Year Award. President of the Perrysburg Area Historic Museum and the Wolcott House Guild, she is a member of the board of Historic Perrysburg.

To be held beginning at 7 p.m. in Wakeman Hall, 401 Farnsworth Rd., in Waterville, the program is free and open to the public.
