The Toledo Fair Housing Center will receive $1.4 million in several federal grants over three years, an amount unprecedented in the agency's history, said Michael Marsh, a vice president at the center.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced grants to 12 fair housing organizations in Ohio and others nationwide on Thursday.

Mr. Marsh said the grants will be used for education, outreach, and enforcement of the Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination in the sale and rental of housing.

The competitive grants are funded through HUD's Fair Housing Initiatives Program and are part of more than $41 million distributed nationwide to 99 fair housing organizations and other nonprofit agencies in 35 states and the District of Columbia, according to HUD.
