Bedford Twp. garden tour scheduled

Club's annual tour arrives Saturday

TEMPERANCE -- The Bedford Flower and Garden Club has scheduled its annual garden tour Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This tour, the group's 16th, is called "Secret Gardens, Hidden Gems of Bedford Township" and features the gardens of five residences and the Bedford Branch Library. The event is a fund-raiser that permits the club to offer two $1,200 scholarships to Bedford High School seniors planning to study in a horticulture-related field.

The tour also generates funds for community education programs and maintenance of the library's garden, which Jessie Green, garden club president, said is an important part of the club's mission.

The tour, which costs $8, will begin at the library, as it does every year. The library also will have cookies and refreshments, along with the club's "backyard boutique" selling garden art, reference materials, and other garden-related items.

Last year's tour attracted 300.

The private gardens in this year's tour are those of Trudy and Aldo Urbani and Cheryl and David Roman of Lambertville and Sue and Jerry Hubbard, Janet and Gale Stoller, and Kathy and Don Rasey, all of Temperance.

Mrs. Urbani said she has many hostas and hydrangeas on her two-acre property, where the house is set back 200 feet from the road.

The garden club was formed in 1993 by a group of women who saw a need for gardening work at the original library on Jackman Road. The club's efforts intensified when the new library was built at the site. The club also puts great stock in gardener education and holds classes.
